That is why we perform a variety of medical duties, including writing Nexus Letters, for our clients. Continue reading to learn more about Nexus Letters, why they are important, and how to obtain one.
What Is A Nexus Letter?
Nexus Letters may be an essential part of a Veteran’s proof to convey how an injury or medical condition is directly related to military service or a service-connected disability. The definition of “nexus” is a link or series of links between two or more things. In terms of a Nexus Letter, the nexus is the connection between a Veteran’s military service and an ongoing medical condition, an injury, or another service-connected circumstance. Nexus Letters can be written by a medical expert and details their medical opinion regarding a Veteran’s condition.
Claims That Require Nexus Letters
A Veteran may be required to provide medical evidence showing how their current condition was caused by their military service. In order for the VA to provide disability benefits to military personnel, they must have clear proof that the injuries/condition was caused by a Veteran’s military service. This proof can be presented in the form of a nexus letter.
If a Veteran’s current condition was caused by a different condition related to their military service, they will also need a Nexus Letter that describes how their current condition was caused by the first, service-connected condition. Another kind of claim that may benefit from a Nexus Letter would be a case of a mental disorder, such as PTSD. Similarly to other cases, mental health disorders need to be linked to military circumstances or events in order for the VA to recognize a disability and act accordingly.
The Four Elements Of A Nexus Letter
There are four crucial elements that must always be present in a Nexus Letter. They are as follows:
- The physician’s credentials, specifically the reasons why they are qualified to speak about a Veteran’s particular condition (i.e. a pulmonologist discussing a lung issue).
- A statement that proves that the physician has reviewed the Veteran’s records, including both medical and military records.
- The physician’s thoughts and opinion about the diagnosed condition and its connection to the individual’s military service.
- Supported medical reasoning that holds up the doctor’s opinion.
How To Get A Medical Nexus Letter
In most cases, a medical specialist who practices in the area in which the Veteran’s condition or injury resides can write a Nexus Letter and it will suffice. However, there are sometimes more complex cases that may require multiple Nexus Letters, specifically cases where there is less research about a particular condition. It is up to the Veteran to get in touch with different specialists to obtain Nexus Letters. The medical experts who write the letters do not have to be connected to the VA. They simply need to have experience with the disability system.
It can take time to obtain a Nexus Letter due to needing to find a medical expert who has the correct specializations and knows your condition. Start by talking with the medical professionals who you have gone to in the past and then branch out if they are unwilling to write a letter for you. It may also be beneficial to consider getting a letter from a Veteran specific medical institution, such as Capsarri Medical.
